Found an Epson 1400 in my basement

Recommended Posts

I have an Epson 1400 with a CISS already installed that I used for printable heat transfers many years ago. This printer was last used probably in 2011! I want to try DTF and figured this would be a nice introductory for me without having to buy a brand new printer.

A couple questions I have are:

Would a regular cleaning solution used for DTF maintenance be enough to clean out the old ink before I use DTF inks?

Is it better to set up an external waste tank? Or is it similar to the XP-15000 that I read I can just cut the top off and dump out the ink?

Thanks in advance!

1430 needs the hoses pulled and a waste tank applied, software to reset it.

It depends on the ink in the printer, if you printed printable heat transfers then you likely used pigment ink, which not used for 10 years, it likely isn’t going to work but worth a try. Peizo plush is good for pigment inks.

Thank you for your reply! I watched some videos and I think I have the external waste tank figured out now. I bought some aquarium tubing and connectors and hope they’ll fit.

As for the software to reset, is it the WIC reset tool and I have to keep buying keys every time I need to reset?

And yes, I did you use pigment inks. I’ll look up the Peizo cleaner and see if I can get it here in Canada. 😊

On another note, I also have an unopened XP-15000 and I’ve seen your posts and replies helping others convert theirs. I look forward to that printer being my next project! I’m doing the 1400 first because the RIP software is cheaper lol. Once I save a bit more I’ll be able to invest in EKPrint for the XP-15000 license.

Thank you! I think I found the right program for unlimited resets now that I did another search. That’ll help so much since I expect I’ll need to do tons of cleanings.

I found some unused refillable cartridges but they have sponges in them. Can I still use them with DTF inks or do I need spongeless refill cartridges? I want to toss the old CISS and just use cartridges like you’ve recommended in other posts I’ve seen.

I would use spongeless for sure. I’d get a couple sets. You could use those sponged carts for cleaner/flushing to try and get things printing. You can see nozzle checks on paper with a flashlight with clear liquid, or use an inkjet transparency. Might try that before investing more into it and it may not work to save on losses if it doesn’t work.

the 15000 is good, but the aftermarket carts I had didn’t seat very well, so unless the updated them you’ll get leaking. The overall recommendation is to remove them and place empty/cleaner filled carts in at night with both plugs in so it doesn’t leak but also protects the head from drying out.
